OVERVIEW: 

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution is now the world's largest single environmental health risk. Climate change and wildfires compound the problem. People spend 90% of their time indoors, thus the EPA, WHO, and US states provide recommendations and guidelines concerning indoor air quality. However, these are not very specific, and large indoor spaces such as nursing homes have a high spatial and temporal variability of air-quality. Furthermore, a single sensor costs approximately $500/year and the fixed locations monitored by air quality sensors have to satisfy a set of requirements (e.g., be at breathing height, unobstructed, and tamper-proof). Thus, even in facilities that monitor air quality, most indoor locations will be unmonitored. AI-based Air Quality Coach (AIrQoach), is a software-system to estimate the air quality at unmonitored indoor locations, to control indoor air-quality accordingly, and to personalize and track air-quality information and risk-mitigation for occupants.  

AirQoach is a software system consisting of a server and an app. The server maintains digital twins and produces air-quality heatmaps for client indoor spaces. The AirQoach app is designed for use by persons with a smartphone (carrying air quality sensors is not necessary). The app tracks and informs a user in real-time of their Personalized Air Quality Index (PAQI).

BENEFITS:

AirQoach benefits facility/building managers and individuals. The benefit to facility managers is that the AirQoach heatmaps (namely interpolation functions that estimate pollutant-concentrations at unmonitored locations) improve air-quality control. They do so by controlling ventilation and air purification based on flexible aggregation of interpolations over an entire indoor space, or over partitions of the space. Ventilation and air-purification may also depend on the occupants' level of physical activity. Specifically, to better control health-risks, air-quality may increase as the level of physical activity increases.

AirQoach benefits to individuals include PAQI computation. The PAQI considers both the air quality at the user's indoor hyper-location, and their breathing rate and volume. Furthermore, the app tracks the PAQI over time enabling personalized medicine, and it suggests personalized Risk Mitigation actions via real-time smartphone-notifications. The actions depend on the pollutant, on the user's health-profile, and on their exposure history. AirQoach provides a connection between buildings and occupants' smartphones.   .
